Old Faithful: ’60 Volvo 544 Sedan
The “Drive It Like You Hate It” campaign referred to the 122S but it is totally apropos for a 544. Loyal 544 owners are often teased that their trusty classic looks like a shrunken old Ford. Nothing could be more far from the truth. These Volvos were actually sport sedans dressed in a housecoat instead of an evening gown. The 544 feels anything but stodgy. It is stoutly constructed and at 2100 lb., pretty light on its feet. It feels quite nimble and the 90 horsepower B16 is enough to move it along nicely. It was considered peppy for its day. So peppy, it was actually faster to 60 than many sports cars. Now if we didn’t find our Mercedes-Benz 230S, we would not be featuring this Volvo. We would be on our to New Jersey to have a look. These were very successful rally racers with numerous first place finishes. From a collectors viewpoint it isn’t going to make you rich. So treat this gently used 544 with respect but get it out on the road and stretch its legs. The current owner has cared for it for 33 years and is an active member of the Volvo Club. That means it is probably a very good example. We know these club enthusiasts and they respect the brand vigorously. From the pictures on eBay it looks like it has not been modified but a closer inspection will reveal the true story. The interior feels right and so does the engine compartment. The bumper overriders, mud flaps are period correct too. We like it! So click here to go to the eBay Auction.
A Volvo 544 (1959 version) was my first car. All my friends thought I had the valve cover chromed but it came that way from the factory! I didn’t drive my Volvo like I hated it but I drove it like a teenager who thought he was the next Dan Gurney. I shifted with revs way to high, dowshifted way to often and took corners way to fast. The Volvo never let me down.
As stated, it was a sedan but a peppy one and ran like the sports car I thought it was.
Great car! Great 1st car! Great collector car!
