Like Minds: ’71 BMW 2002
Some of the world’s greatest cars are happy accidents. The BMW 2002 is one of them. Helmut Bönsch, BMW’s director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, designer of the M10 engine, each had a two litre engine installed in a 1600-2 for their personal use. When they realized they had both made the same modification to their own cars, they prepared a joint proposal to BMW’s board to manufacture a two litre version of the 1600-2. Across the pond, US importer, Max Hoffman, was asking BMW for a sportier version of the 1600 series that could be sold in the United States. Boom! The 2002 was born. The BMW was a smash then and now, with legions of enthusiasts who appreciate the nimble handling 3-box sedan. They were durable cars but rust was always an issue so clean cars from out west are prized. Now today’s pick is an import from Germany living in California. So what that tells us is to take the seller’s words as truth but verify. The seller’s states little other than it is perfect. We hope it is but we all buy perfect cars but somehow we never sell one. The asking price is $14000. Get the contact information and see more detailed photos by clicking here.
