Made in Switzerland: ’60 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe

Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

This is a story we were never aware of and it has come to us from our frequent contributor, Frank K.. It involves one of our favorite VWs, the Karmann Ghia. Demand for the early Karmann Ghia was so great, that Karmann could barely keep up on the stamping, but not the assembly and final detail finishing. So a Swiss company, AMAG, who employed a section of coachbuilders themselves and had a successful race shop in-house, built a few hundred Karmann Ghias, of which a few survive. Volkswagen Karmann GhiaThe AMAG-assembled Karmann Ghias were known as “Montage Suisse” cars, and some of the later ones wore a modified version of the standard Karmann-Ghia nose badge with “Montage Suisse” silkscreen on it to signify such. Another telltale of a Montage Suisse AMAG-built Karmann Ghia is a badge in the engine bay with “AMAG Lauf Nr. xxxxxx” on it. These cars still have the Volkswagenwerk ID plate in the luggage compartment. Frank was astute enough to know that this VW was something special. Only 150 of the AMAG Ghias were built in Switzerland in 1960, and this offering is one of three AMAG Karmann Ghias in the United States. Now that’s rare but who will know the difference? The Ghia has been restored and slightly modified. The original engine was replaced with a 2100cc engine which should add some scoot to the package. The rest of the car appears to have had a quality revitalization. It looks great in the photos. But again. it is rare but who will know by just looking at it?
