Outrageous Red Pig: ’71 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 AMG Replica

The AMG racing sedan was technically based on the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. With an engine output of 250 hp at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 140 mph, the 6.3 was Germany’s fastest regular production car at the time. AMG bumped the displacement to 6835 cc and that increased the output to 428 hp at 5500 rpm. The fenders were flared to make room for the lightweight size 10 x 15 and 12 x 15-inch magnesium wheels adopted from a C 111 test car. Aluminium doors helped to reduce the car’s weight and a larger front wishbones, a more robust rear axle with a heavy-duty differential and smaller, stiffer suspension air bellows made the sedan fit for the racetrack. On July 25, 1971, the bright red four-door sedan crossed the finish line in second place at the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps.
