Stretch Marque: ’79 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC 5.0
Mercedes Benz typically follows the launch of a new SL with a Coupe version. The R107 version was quite popular and it sported Mercedes’ first V-8 in an SL. The SLC was a nice, comfortable luxury touring car with somewhat ungainly styling. It had a real rear seat so it was a bit more versatile than the convertible. Mercedes selected the SLC to represent their racing efforts and in doing so, inspired the car we feature today. Encouraged by the success of the 450 SLC in the 1978 South American Rally, Mercedes-Benz updated the base model to suit future racing. A minimum number of road cars needed were required for homologation purposes. The all aluminum 5-liter engine developed for the rally cars was capable of 240 bhp and reduced the weight of the already heavy 450 coupe. Mercedes-Benz fitted a lightweight aluminum hood and trunk. The cars retained the standard 3-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter. Racing versions of the 450 SLC-5.0 were eligible as a Group 4 rally car and were stripped out and entered in events like the African Safari Rally, and Ivory Coast Rally. What we have here is a European import factory homologation 5.0. This one looks to be in good condition although the Mercedes cloth on the driver’s seat will have to be addressed. The true mileage is unknown but you should be able to determine the overall condition with a good solid PPI. We like it in black with blue interior. We might consider a different direction with the wheels but the current wheels look fine. See the listing on eBay by clicking here.
The car is still for sale. It hasn14,000 on the odometer. My wife wants a 560sl or good old Mercedes convertable. Let me know if anyone is interested?
Still for sale?
Perhaps you missed the part where it was lifted from an eBay auction. I thought it was an interesting car so I wrote about my opinion. Looks like you agree with me. It is uber cool but I have no knowledge where it might be by now. Interesting to note, since I wrote that piece, I purchased a 450SLC with the intention of making into a rally car tribute. Alas, the car I found and treasure is too nice to fool around with. Keep looking for a good SLC while they are affordable.
The car is located in the Midwest and is for sale. Let me know if you are interested
