The New “It” Car: ’79 Mercedes-Benz 300TD Diesel Longroof

The first Mercedes turbo diesel production for the very popular W123 appeared in September, 1979. This was the 300 TD Turbodiesel, available with automatic transmission only. In most markets, the turbocharged 5-cylinder 3 litre diesel engine was offered only in the T body style, while in North America it was also available in sedan and coupé bodies. These W123 cars are a testament to Mercedes’ legendary build quality. Although not entirely indestructible, they hold up amazingly well. Granted, some of the support systems, apart from the Diesel engine, are more than likely to fail before the engine needs a rebuild and that can get expensive. But there are specialists out there to help you keep a good W123 on the road forever. One of these shops is located in California and it is run by J.G. Francis, a young guy who appreciates a good Benz when he sees one. He has devoted his working life to keeping these cars on the road. Some refer to the estate version as “the longroof” and we kind of like that. And it is the longroofs that are the most sought after. Mr. Francis has this beautiful white over navy M-B Tex that has been treated to over $40,000 in restoration work. It is immaculate and worth every penny of the huge number they are asking and that is $24,000. But pause for a moment. What will a new VW Jetta TDi wagon cost you?
