Interim Step: ’54 MG TF Roadster
The MG TF is the final iteration of the T-series MGs. It was sort of looked upon as an interim model while the MGA was in development. MG engineers took the TD and replaced it with a chassis 3-inches lower, and sporting a sloping grill and faired-in headlights. Like the TD, a 1,250-cc, XPAG inline-four engine was initially used to generate 54 hp. Shortly after introduction, however, a more potent 1,466-cc XPEG engine was installed. These cars carried 1500 badges on the sides of the hoods to visually distinguish them from the 1250s. The seller doesn’t indicate whether this is a 1250 or 1500. Our go-to database wasn’t helpful so this would be the 1st question to ask the seller. The TF looks like an update of the MG TD, but it was criticized upon launch. The TF competed against the brand-new Triumph TR2 and Austin-Healey 100 which featured full-width bodywork and 100 mph top speeds. The TF seemed somewhat antiquated by comparison. We like this TF. It appears like a solid, well cared for example with good pictures to wet your appetite. The seller states that it is top running condition with few flaws cosmetically. Some small detail tasks required could be knocked off in a weekend. Hagerty has 1250s in #3 driver condition getting $20,000 with top show cars cracking mid-forties. This one has a Buy It Now at $25,500 which seems reasonable to us. Click here for more pictures and eBay Auction.
