Not just a used car: ’88 Volvo 240 DL Wagon
If you are saying to yourself “what in the hell are these Mint guys thinking”, you might not appreciate loyalty. The Volvo 240 wagon, in any of its many flavors, is a robust almost indestructible mode of transportation. And it is to be respected for that. One can equate it to the Labrador Retriever. If you owned one, you know what we mean. You just get attached to them.
Our ’89 240 DL story is like that. We bought it while working at Volvo Cars in Rockleigh, New Jersey. Apparently, a bunch of 240s were misplaced at the shipping dock in Gothenburg and not discovered for months into the next model year. They were offered to employees on a lottery basis and we won the right to buy a red wagon. The prices were great too. Our youngest son came home from the hospital in it. After we were on to our next wagon, a 740 Turbo, we drove the 240 out to Colorado to our extended family living in Denver. Decades later they passed it to their daughter living in Washington, DC. The 240 lived on the street there. Then she got a job overseas and gave the Volvo to her brother and it now lives on the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. So when you see a restored and smartly modified 240 Wagon in superlative condition like this one, we know people will be interested. The seller spent some considerable time and effort making this one special. The engine is an upgrade and so is the suspension. Even the A/C has been adapted to modern standards. It hasn’t been overly customized and looks good on newer Volvo wheels shod with Pirelli P6s. Someone needs to adopt this one and make some memories. Click here for the eBay auction.
