Pinch Hitter: ’76 Porsche 912E Sunroof

Sometimes, like in life, companies rush something into production to fill a void left by a delay in a truly new model. The 912E was such a car. It occupied the entry-level position left vacant by the discontinuation of the 914, while the new 924 – another Porsche-Volkswagen joint effort vehicle and the 914’s official replacement – was being finalized and put into production. During the production run of May 1975 to July 1976, Porsche manufactured nearly 2,100 of the 912E . The 912E was powered by an 86 bhp 2.0 L Volkswagen engine refined with a new Bosch L-Jetronic Fuel injection system. So a Porsche with a total production of 2,100 cars is reasonably rare. Today, partly because many of them have met their fate and are long gone, they are rare. So it is nice to see an unmolested original in a nice color turn up. And it has a sunroof too. The engine had a rebuild not too long ago but there is no mention of how many miles on the chassis. But it has had only 3 owners since new and all of the books have managed to stay with the car. So maybe it lucked out and had owners that cared? It is a good car to consider.
