Re-listed: ’60 Porsche 356B Coupe
The seller has re-listed the 356B on eBay. We still like this Porsche but need to make a clarification. The seller never stated the interior was original to the car therefore our comment that it is “reference quality” is incorrect. It is nice however we spent Sunday morning with the owner of a 356B with original interior and we can readily see the differences. Again, this is not the seller’s issue but ours. We’ll try harder.
Pricing classic cars is not a science. For that matter the same philosophy applies to anything – real estate, artwork, jewelry. If you have something to sell you do your research, see what other equivalent items are selling for, adjust for flaws or unique features and set a price. The marketplace then tells you how right or wrong you are. We spotted this Reutter-bodied 356B Coupe and immediately fell in love. Then we looked at the price at $100,000 large (stand corrected. $100 large). Immediately we thought the seller was way ahead of the marketplace but then we discovered it is a 31,000 mile 2-owner car in reference quality condition. That gave us pause. Is it worth that much? If you were looking for a great car to take on Rallies and just bang around town, then we would look elsewhere. You don’t want to beat this car into being just another 356B. This deserves to be kept as it is. Then we believe this car will find a home with a wealthy Porsche collector. Someone who understands the value of a car like this. From the listing, it sounds like the seller was a mechanic that worked at Hoffman Motors in New York City. He then purchased the car from the original owner. Needless to say, it is a matching numbers car in flawless black and stunning red interior. If you own a Reutter-body 356B, I wouldn’t get too excited if this does sell at $100 grand. Yours may be nice but it isn’t this perfect. Contact the seller by clicking here.
I see numerous flaws in the interior redo. Nothing not fixable but at the price I would expect perfection. I find original interiors in old cars to be so charming and characterful, I wonder why a 31,000 mile car would would need a complete interior redo.
At the risk of being pedantic, “$100,000 large” would be $100,000,000. I suspect that you meant 100 large (i.e. 100×1,000).
I told you he might be ahead of the market! I do stand corrected and thanks for the comment.
What a beautiful Porsche!!
