Split Window: ’52 Volkswagen Beetle
In 1963, Chevrolet introduced the Corvette Stingray Coupe with a split rear window. It only lasted one year so those split window coupes are quite the collector car. Many old cars from the 1900s had split rear windows including today’s featured Volkswagen from 1952. Volkswagen had split rear windows from the beginning until 1954 when they went to the small oval window. We refer to VWs by the size of their window because little else changed in the body design. Hence we have loyal split fans and loyal oval fans. We tried to come up with a comp for this phenomena but nothing came to mind in the time allowed. This VW is very nice and has been through a few owners including a VW dealer where it spent some time in storage. These cars are as simple as a Model T to restore with parts available for everything. So when it comes to judging the quality of the restoration you have to look at execution. This is not a concours quality car judging by the interior, the engine compartment and a few more flaws we spotted in the photos. But there is a lot to like about this one starting with the color. It is a great, period color that is one of our VW favorites. We noticed that there was sloppy masking effort on the data tag photo featured in the listing. The seats are the right color but not sure if it the correct material and fit. We also have a beef with the leaving things that don’t work that are easy to fix. In this case “the choke doesn’t work” is sort of unforgivable. These early Beetles have been on a valuation tear recently seeing as much as a 20% jump since this time last year. This might not be a perfect example but it could be a lot better in the correct hands. Are those hands yours? See the eBay listing by clicking here.
I own this car now. Purchased in Los Angeles area. Where is this pic taken?
And do you know who the owner was. I’m trying to find out it’s history.
Thanks
Sorry for the delay in response, Linda. No. I don’t have any more information about the Beetle. It is always fun trying to find out as much as you can though. So enjoy the investigative part of owning a vintage VW! Happy Holidays.
Thanks anyway for trying & responding.
