Another bargain Maserati: ’68 Maserati Ghibli
Okay, so maybe bargain isn’t the proper way to describe any low volume, Italian Super Car from the sixties. But comparable cars like the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Miura will set you back 8-times more money and not get you a better parking space when you pull up in front of Chateau Marmont. The Maserati Ghibli is an Italian gran turismo produced from 1967 to 1973 so our feature car is one of the early ones from 1968. Ghiblis share their underpinnings and mechanicals with the Mexico 2+2 coupe and power comes from a dry-sump, twin-cam 4.7-liter V-8. The engine breathes through four twin-choke Weber carburetors, produced 310 horsepower and 341 ft-lb of torque, and was mated to a ZF five-speed manual. Top speed was rated at 154 mph, with 60 mph coming in just under seven seconds. Experts believe the valuation of a Ghibli results from it being an 8-cylinder car instead of a V-12. It certainly can’t be because the others are sexier. Hagerty and Sports Car Market share the future potential of the Ghibli. Both have #1 cars over $80,000 with appreciation to exceed market. The seller, a dealer in The Hamptons, doesn’t offer any details except name, rank and serial number so be prepared with a potential horror story that goes deeper than the beautiful body. This car looks good in the pictures and the mileage is right but don’t go near it without an expert’s evaluation and a look at maintenance records. Buy this one right, leave room for lots of mechanical freshening and have some serious fun. This is definitely not a car for beginners but for someone who can properly evaluate the risks and rewards.
