Get Started: ’57 Mercedes-Benz 220S
We got to know an experienced Enduro Rally Owner/Driver and architect, Steven H., while we at the Radnor Hunt Concours. Steven has an immaculately prepared (but not immaculate) Porsche 356C that has taken him from Peking to Paris and around South America. These events are not for the faint of heart. If you want a nice hotel or cushy Inn every night, there are great events stateside run by Rich and Jean Taylor. Their events give back to charity too and that’s nice. Events like Peking to Paris are endurance events where car preparation is almost everything. So if you want to participate in the next Peking to Paris in 2015, buy today’s featured car and get busy. The 220S looks like a perfect choice although you would be surprised by what some folks will attempt to run it in. It is a comfortable car, built like a tank and has plenty of room for fuel cells, spares and tools. This one may look too nice but you need to start out with a decent car that hasn’t been manhandled by some bodyshop along the way. Today’s featured car looks perfect for the task. It is said to steer, drive and brake well but that doesn’t matter because we are going to take apart each of those systems and rebuild them to take a real beating. Black is good too. Not sure why but it looks cool. The red interior is in good shape and will probably fetch a hefty sum on eBay. We are going to need just 2 racing seats and no rear seat. That space is for camping gear and emergency supplies. Don’t wait too long to snatch this one up. We think it is going to go cheap and that will help because we hear it could cost up to $100,000 for the privilege to run. Hopefully that includes the cost of the car. Maybe not? Anyone have Rich and Jean Taylor’s phone number? Click here for the eBay auction.

I don’t have Rich and Jean’s phone number handy, but I suggest you check out their website at vintagerallies.com. I ran my first New England 1000 fifteen years ago, and have returned several times since then (with domestic, British, and Italian cars and different co-drivers). If Peking to Paris is a bit rich for your blood, try one of Rich and Jean’s professionally-run events. They’re a great way to exercise your favorite sports car on two-lane twisties away from the crowds, collect a variety of insect life on your windshield, enjoy the company of like-minded enthusiasts, visit some incredible private car collections along the way, and contribute to worthy charities as well.
