Hitch’s Caddy: ’58 Cadillac Sedan deVille
It isn’t really Alfred Hitchcock’s Cadillac but it serves the purpose referring to it here as his. Hitchcock is seen many times being driven to the studio in a Cadillac exactly like this one in the movie version of Alfred Hitchcock’s career during the filming of Psycho. The movie, Hitchcock, portrays Alma, his wife and muse, as the driver most of the time. It was a perfect selection by the production designer of the movie to select a car like the Sedan de Ville to depict Hitch’s car (maybe he did own one). Cadillacs were what many people aspired to own back in the day.
They were the undisputed king of the American car culture. We happen to watch the movie last week starring Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins so when we spotted this almost identical car, we said, why not. This featured Sedan deVille still has plastic seat covers protecting the originals from god knows what. It looks like they’ve done a good job and perhaps their time is up. We would remove them immediately. The exterior paint has been redone plus a few mechanical things that required replacement. But at 52,000 original miles, there wasn’t much to do. It does have A/C, tinted glass and power windows. We are sure Hitchcock’s was equipped the same way. Although it is in fine condition, we don’t expect it to bring a lot of money. We think somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000 ought to do it. Click here for the eBay auction.
Hitchcock did…I read one biography describing their regular trips in their Cadillac from Hollywood to their second home in Northern California–little Alma behind the wheel, the housekeeper planning menus beside her, and Alfred working in the back seat.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Cadillac is seen twice in the movie “Psycho” when Janet Leigh trades in her car at the used car lot. The car drives by twice. The car used in the movie “Hitchcock” was not chosen by the production designer. We have a copy of a draft of the script by Steven Rebello. It specifies the car, year, and model right in the screenplay.
It is not a Sedan de Ville. It is a Series 62 Extended Deck Sedan.
We know the extended deck Cadillacs are longer but how did you pick up the error with such limited photos? Just curious…
