Muscle Cars Return, Part 2: ’89 Pontiac Trans-Am GTA
General Motors wanted to share the wealth so they gave Pontiac the boosted V6 from the GNX to spice up the Trans-Am. The same engine that made the GNX a mythological figure, worked its magic in the sleeker Trans-Am bodywork. The GTA was asked to pace the Indy 500 and traditionally, the marketing gurus made a special edition in small batches to sell to customers to celebrate the honor. Today’s featured GTA is not only a beast but a rare GTA “Festival” car. There were only 150 of these made and we are told every one of them lapped the Brickyard during the 500 Festival. Today’s featured car is #99/150 and it has about 21,000 miles. The listing has a number of enhancements made to the package, none of them would be evident to the naked eye. It still rides on the original wheels and all of the bodywork is as it left the factory. They were all made with cloth seats allegedly so the festival drivers wouldn’t sweat while driving their laps. The asking price is $26,995. Hagerty has a #3 at $19,000 #2 at $35,000 up to $45,000 for a #1 example. Maybe the asking price is pretty close to reality? Click here to contact the seller.
