30/1239: ’88 BMW E 28 Series M5
The M series cars were really limited and very exclusive at one time. M5s were assembled by a small group of BMW Motorsport technicians who mated the drivetrain and interior trim with pre-painted bodies transported from the Dingolfing factory. E28 M5s built beginning in 9/86 were assembled at the newly-opened BMW Motorsport headquarters in Garching, about 60 miles from Munich. All E28 M5s are cool but this featured car is special in a very ordinary way. It has a black interior. Natur (tan) leather interior was the only official interior color choice for the U.S. market, but Canada insisted on giving E28 M5 buyers the second option of a black. The black interior option was introduced to the U.S. market at the very end of E28 M5 production. Our sources say 101 E28 M5s with a black interior were produced for North America, of which 71 were built to Canadian specification and the rest, that’s 30 out of 1239 cars, were U.S. specification. Pretty cool. This has got to be one of the best cared for M5s of the period available. The seller tells us of all the replaced parts and proper maintenance completed with documentation. The paint and interior are original and the everything works. The lucky owner gets around $4,000 worth of extra parts and maintenance items with the sale. As rare and enjoyable as these are, Sports Car Market Price Guide classifies them as used cars and therefore they don’t value them. This is an eBay auction and that will set the price if it sells. If you really want one of these (we do), Hagerty tells us the numbers range from $9,000 to $20,000. This one may be great but the mileage at 160,000 may work against it. Click here for the listing.
