“40” had one: ’78 Subaru Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter AKA BRAT
Ronald Reagan had a ’78 BRAT at his ranch for 20 years. Actually, President Reagan’s BRAT was restored and returned to the ranch. The BRAT had these unusual rear facing seats in the bed area. That was to avoid the chicken tax imposed on commercial vehicles imported to the US. The seats, however ridiculous, made the BRAT a passenger vehicle. Today’s featured survivor BRAT is a 1st year edition with the 1.6 liter engine and 4-speed transmission. All BRATs were 4-wheelers like all Subarus. By the way, the BRAT was the vision of the US president of Subaru of America. This one appears to have been adult owned and well cared for. The listing says it has A/C and covered only 63,000 miles. Looks pretty good although it does need some work to be totally road worthy. It is just a fun used 4-wheeler and you won’t see one like this everyday. Hey, it might even become one of those funky Japanese collectibles one day. Click here for the listing.
