C&D Ten Best Winner: ’85 Porsche 944
Car & Driver singled out the 944 for good reason. “For the third year in a row, we were unanimous in our choice of the Porsche 944 as one of the Ten Best Cars available to American buyers. It’s hard to remember, now, all those years we suffered with the 924, and it’s difficult, now, to imagine how a sow’s ear like the 924 could be turned into a silk purse like the 944.” They go on to say, “It is a high-spirited car that loves to be flung through difficult corners, yet it never loses an underlying feeling of mechanical precision.” Truthfully, it isn’t a collector car, it is just a really nice sports coupe; and a Porsche at that. This one is probably one of the best around and it doesn’t look like a cliché in Guards Red. It is equipped with a Becker Monterey, Limited Slip, rear wiper, sports seats and electric sunroof. It only has 31,000 Porsche enthusiast-owned miles and they are probably pretty well cared for miles. Is is worth the $18,900 asking price? Not if you read the SCM Price Guide or any guide for that matter. You have to want this Porsche like we do because it is a terrific car even by today’s standard.
