Part 300: ’56 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

56 SL fr 2

This is another one of those classic cars that were ignored for such a long time and are now on fire. They are elegant convertibles with impeccable build-quality typical of Mercedes-Benz cars of this period. The downside of the 190SL is the somewhat anemic performance. Since you can’t really do too much about that, just put the top down and enjoy the ride. Today’s featured car might actually have something we haven’t seen before – seats from a 300SL. 56 MB 190 DashThe seller says it is a rare option offered by the factory back in the day. I know one of our readers, Brian, will chime in and let us know if that is in fact a factory option. He’ll also probably tells us about the rest of the car from the few photos available on the listing. The 190SL does come with a factory hard top and that is a good thing. It is a numbers matching car too. The asking price is $80,000. We’ve seen them for more and for less. All depends on the quality of the work and history available. Click here for the listing.

The mirror should not be on the door, the steering column should be black and the gas cap is wrong. The list goes on.

These are not 300 SL seats, they are different, but are 300 SL “style” as Brian notes, the seats that were supplied in early Roadsters (as opposed to coupes). This car has several problems, incorrect front signals, incorrect taillights, incorrect shift knob based on what I can determine as the chassis number on an earlier 190 SL with no clock. The trunk should not be carpeted, nor in front of the seats. The rear bumper guards are all wrong. The body work is marginal at best. Looks like it’s had a going over by a less than disciplined technician and seems overpriced to me.

I don’t know that it was an option but rather all early 190SLs had the 300SL “style” seats. I do not believe that they are a direct swap but they do indeed look very close.
