Longroof: ’79 Mercedes-Benz 300TD
We can’t explain why some cars become icons and others simply disposable used cars. There are many old Volvos and SAABs that fall into that icon category. It happens frequently with a Mercedes-Benz although there are more frequent gems than bums. You wouldn’t think the 300TD Diesel Wagon would rise to mythic proportions but it has captured quite a following. Rarely does that happen to a car with a diesel motor putting out 77HP. We think it is the virtually indestructibility of the entire package that makes people fall in love with it. People take ownership of them knowing they are only custodians of a vehicle that will outlast them. Today’s find is not the more desirable Turbo but a plain old naturally aspirated version. It has 150,000 miles on it so it has been broken in but it has many, many spins around the clock left. This one just looks like it deserves to have some serious consideration. The exterior looks clean as does the interior. A phone call to the seller will reveal (hopefully) the unseen issues. The asking price is reasonable for a station wagon version at $9800.
