A Tribute to NASCAR

NASCAR RacersIf you are a racing snob and you think drivers should have names like Ludovico, Colin or Hans, I may have lost you today. Today, racing is about guys with names like Fireball, Junior, and even Tiny. It is the weekend when NASCAR kicks off the season with the classic on the beach – The Daytona 500.

NASCAR history is the stuff movies are made of. Bill France, Sr. organized a bunch of former bootleggers into one of the most profitable franchises in history. Then he built The Daytona Speedway back in 1959 and gave us the race we will all watch today. Maybe with historic results too. Kind of like Hilary running for President. We can’t cover the history of stock car racing in this space but go to Wikipedia and learn about the early days of the sport. It will make you appreciate today even more. And watch this silly (but cool) video for a few minutes – An Ode to Fireball Roberts. Very kitschy.

Stone’s throw: ’54 MG TF Rally Racer

We love a car with a good story. This is one of them. It was ordered by a man named Dale Stone who was an active member of the MG Club. He set the car up as a rally racer and entered it into the Palm Springs, California Desert Rally. The listing tells us, he ordered a Sherrock Supercharger that unfortunately he never installed. Very Blue: ’76 Mercedes-Benz 450SL

28We learned something new when we ran across this R107 Mercedes Roadster. There was a special order Code 904 if you really, really, really liked the color blue. We do like blue so this special 450SL appeals to us. It is a 56,000 mile example that is very original and appears to be in superb condition. The interior is immaculate and this being an early car in the long-lived R107 series, it is almost devoid of any wood treatment. Read More

Elegant Diesel: ’80 Mercedes-Benz 300CD

What a special car this is. Mercedes-Benz has a rich tradition of building low volume Coupes and Convertibles. The practice seems to have waned a bit but as recently as the ’80s, M-B had some cars that were virtually hand-built. We aren’t talking Rolls-Royce hand-built but cars that moved down the line a little slower than the others. This Coupe is in a special color that you won’t see everyday and the interior is also quite remarkable. We don’t expect you to run out and subscribe to Hemmings Sports & Exotics Magazine just to read an article about—-US!!! Well, it isn’t exactly about Mint2Me but it is about our Mercedes-Benz 230 S rally Tribute aka: The Colonel. Hemmings is a classic/vintage car juggernaut with 4 magazines in print each month. Hemmings probably started it all with that classified ad, brown covered classic that we couldn’t wait to get back in the day before Al Gore invented the Internet. Thankfully, Hemmings has gone digital too so you can read all of their publications on your iPad. We give a shout out to Terry Shea for a well written, accurate article about our journey with The Colonel. I could give you a link to the article but that wouldn’t be fair to Hemmings.
