Calty Research Inspired: ’80 Toyota Celica Supra
We love survivors of all kinds. That simply means it doesn’t matter too much what it is, if it is really old and has avoided the pitfalls of aging, then it is interesting. Well, we may want to modify that statement a wee bit since you probably won’t be seeing a low mileage Chevy II unless it is a 396cid, 4-speed car. Today’s survivor is what we and others call the Japanese Mustang. We are pretty sure our pony car inspired Toyota to come up with something similar and in their wheel house. The Supra has its roots in the rare Toyota 2000GT since the M-Series engine that powers the early Supras is a version of that engine. The Supras design is influenced by the Celica that was designed in California by Toyota’s Calty Research Center. The Supra was longer to accommodate the inline 6-cylinder engine. Today’s survivor has just 54,000 miles on it and is equipped with a 4-speed automatic. It is also equipped with the convenience package that includes power windows and locks. The interior looks pretty darn good for a 34-year-old as does the original exterior paint. We would probably lose the whitewalls right away. This would make a nice, easy vintage car to own and it will certainly be a candidate for a survivor class at a national Japanese car meet. Click here for the listing.
Amazing time capsule, but one of the ugliest Celica body styles ever offered (in this person’s opinion).
