Bad Boy 2: ’93 Mercedes-Benz 500E
The 500E has been surfing under the radar for years. Just recently it made a list on Yahoo Auto of cars that you need to own. The M-B 500E is a freaking German hot rod in the Pontiac GTO tradition. It looks plain on the outside but watch out. The press called it “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”. How unimaginative. It’s Walter White from Breaking Bad. It is a monster with a top speed limited at 160 mph. They made 1,596 of these bombers. More appropriately Porsche made them. Yup. In a spirit of camaraderie, Porsche assembled the 500E engines for Mercedes. Today’s find is one of the lowest mileage 500Es we’ve seen. It has had 4 owners to date and at least one of them purchased the 500E as a Certified Pre-owned car. It is finished in the original Brilliant Silver applied by the factory. The interior appears to be in excellent condition. The individual rear seats are an exclusive detail. The seller lists a number of major service issues performed. You’ll note a replacement wiring harness and that shouldn’t alarm you. We are dealing with the same issue on our ’94 SL500. Apparently, M-B thought it a good idea to use a biodegradable wiring wrap. Well it tends to biodegrade prematurely leaving a brittle mess. Ours were changed too as a preventive measure. The 500E also wears Euro headlamps and wipers. The originals go along with the car as do the original factory wheels. This is a nice package and again, it is a 75,000 mile car with good service history. It won’t go cheaply.
