Early R107: ’72 Mercedes-Benz 450SL
The R107 Roadsters are coming on strong. Not all years, just the really early cars, certain Euro only models and the last year of the 560SL. We aren’t talking 280SL money here but there is a steady demand for low mileage cars in original condition. This one popped up on our radar and it looks interesting. The listing paints the picture of a rural family a few hundred miles north of Denver that has owned this Mercedes-Benz since it was new. It has relatively low miles at 67,000 and comes with the original factory hard top. The photo of the car doesn’t do it justice but there is a glimmer of a find here. It looks like Blue Metallic (DB387) with Blue leather interior. But we could be wrong. We are told it has never been damaged, painted or had any rust. The asking price is $9,000 (well it was when we wrote this. The BIN has been removed. It is now an auction with a $7,000 first bid) and we are totally okay with that if it is what they say it is. And that is a good question. The early US cars sold here in ’72 were badged a 350SL although they had a larger 4.5 liter engine of the soon to be 450SL. So what exactly is this ’72? A 350SL or a ’73? Only a title and paperwork will tell. Click here for the listing.
This car could be a 107044- American 4.5 low compression or it might be a 107043- 3.5 high compression Euro which is a more valuable car. Only the VIN can confirm.
Cost major money to fix all the deferred issues most of these car have, since the owners just drive them into the ground. Without a thick folder of shop tickets its a money pit.
The seller has poor feedback.
