Be brave: ’77 Ferrari GTB
The more we see an early model year Ferrari 308 GTB the more we like them. They are becoming or have already become the latest “it” car. By that we mean, people in the know are scurrying around trying to find the best there is. We’ve seen 308 GTBs sell in a wide range of prices, no doubt based on condition or rarity. The highly sought after Vetroresina (better known here as the fiberglass cars) have sold for over $100,000. That isn’t what we have here today. At best, this is an average 308 GTB with an inoperative odometer. There is some conjecture on when the speedometer quit. A little effort researching might yield some clear timeline and when the last number rolled up. The servicing dealer just performed an $8700 service. That doesn’t go that far in the Ferrari world but if you call they should be able to tell you what else it needs and where the warts are. There are a few things one can determine from the pictures. There are a few rust bubbles and hopefully they are isolated and don’t represent a much larger problem. The rear valence is gone in favor of an aftermarket exhaust system. And finally (?), the driver’s seat needs some work to correct some flaws. And that’s what we can see from the pictures! If you do your due diligence and get this one for a good price, you can enjoy it now and worry about the cosmetics later. We are sure some remedial work can improve things dramatically short-term. If the drivetrain report turns out to be suspect, let someone else have it. Click here for the listing.
One has to question the recent repair work, as the work as described would not have totaled $8700. Secondly, the listing states that “4 replacement Bilstein struts…”… well, Ferrari 308’s do not have struts… they have coil over Shocks and are made by Koni… Given how the engine bay looks, very little was done… I can see only one hose that appears new (thermostat housing hose). Because of all this,I would be concerned about if or how well the timing belt replacement was done. A thorough PPI should be done by anyone interested in the car.
