Interim: ’76 Porsche 912E

Porsche brought this model internally called a Type 923 as an interim model until the 924 was ready. Only on the market for one year, they managed to sell a few thousand cars. The engine was fed by electronic fuel injection that gave it pretty decent power, fuel economy and a range of 600 miles/tank. The 912E was introduced during some trying times and fuel economy was a pretty big deal. On the surface, this looks like a pretty exciting 912E. It has covered only 35,000 miles, is equipped with A/C and a sunroof and generally looks pretty tidy. We noticed a few things we would question however we decided to feature it anyway. The fuel injection has been scrapped in favor of carburetors. The seller touts the fuel injection claims made by Porsche when the car was released but makes no mention of the switch. It is a popular swap but most knowledgeable Porsche 912E folks say it is better to restore or keep the original system. In fact some say driveability and fuel economy suffer. The second area has to do with the poor masking of the data plate next to the trunk hood receiver. It looks sloppy and it should not have been painted under there unless there was crash damage. In our opinion, that is. The asking price is a strong $29,995. If there is a reasonable explanation for the front paint work and a budget can be had to re-install the FI system, this is an interesting car. Click here for the listing.
