Wagon ho: ’78 Alfasud Giardinetta
Someone must have really wanted an Alfasud Giardinetta badly. That person happens to be the seller of today’s featured car. Discovered in somewhat rough shape in Northern Italy, it was restored in Germany for the American owner. According to the listing, it required rockers and a few fenders, interior paint and a new drivetrain. Oddly the Alfa flat “boxer” motor was sourced here in the USA and shipped to Italy for a rebuild and then to Germany for installation. It is was treated to new seat upholstery cloaked in material for an Alfa Romeo Montreal. A very snappy orange and black we might add. There is little to no collector car upside with this one but it is surely a rare bird here in the US. The seller states he showed it at Concorso in 2011. It is an auction so we have no idea what it will sell for. We would like to thank reader, Fred R. for the heads up. Click here, Alfisti, for the listing.
This is the only Giardinetta (not Giardinera) in the US. There are for sure less than 100 Giardinetta survivors around the world with this one being the only one in the US. The originally built number of Giardinetta’s is a little less than 6000 and with it’s workhorse usage on top of the usual Alfasud issues there are very few left.
Interesting that the seller who proclaims to be a real Alfasud fan would refer to the Giardinetta as a Giardiniera in the listing. We must confess to not knowing the designation of an Alfasud wagon so thanks…
OK, I love this.
