Green Saint: ’67 Volvo 1800S

We love the Volvo 1800S and there are legions of new admirers snapping up the best ones. It is getting harder and harder to find one particularly in good condition. The 1800S is a good example of a car that was thought to be on track to be a ho-hum collectible that now has become one of the new it cars everyone wants to have in their collection. And why not with what now appears to be classic styling from the house of Frua. Or was it really designed by the son of a Volvo engineer, Helmer Petterson? For years, Volvo declared their brilliant little GT car was penned by an Italian hand and only recently recognized the contribution of Helmer’s son Pelle who worked at Pietro Frua. And that takes us to today’s exclusive ’67 1800S (notice there is no “P” in front of 1800). This beautifully cared for example has been a west coast resident its entire life. Acquired out of Oregon, another state known for dry cars, the 1800S looks great. We’ve seen the car in person and it looks as good as it does in the photos. We didn’t crawl underneath but we are told it is solid and there are images of the bottom to substantiate that claim. The gaps look really good and the chrome spears appear to line up nicely. The doors shut like a Volvo door should. The interior has many original features including a nice dash, gauges, radio and door panels. The rear seat looks new. The front seats have been recovered in leather that is only slightly off the original but really nice. Mechanically it is a strong runner with a service records pretty far back.
