Fancy: ’62 Morgan Plus 4 Drophead
It is difficult to determine the year of manufacture of a Morgan Plus 4 just by looking at it. That isn’t bad or good but it does have the effect of holding back valuations. Few Morgans are manufactured each year but cumulatively, there are quite a few. Yes, there are seminal changes that have occurred like 3 wheels to 4 and flat grilles to waterfall grilles. Today, you can buy a classic Morgan, albeit with all of the modern improvements, that looks very much like a ’65 to the untrained eye. Today’s featured Morgan is an exceptional ’62 Drophead. The seller tells us Morgan only made 450 of them. What they really mean is Morgan made only 450 of them ever and more like 30 or 40 per year. That’s like Ferrari rare or Maserati rare. During the same time period, Triumph probably made 40,000 TR4s. A really nice TR4 will fetch around $30,000. So why is this rare, exceptionally original, 25,000 mile Drophead only worth twice as much? This may be the most expensive Morgan we have ever seen. The asking price is $60,000. The last high-priced Plus 4 we spotted sold in the low $40s. But if there has ever been one worth $60 Grand, this black DHC is it. The Drophead, by the way, means it has a nicer, more elegant interior with full size doors and a folding roof. Oh, and Ralph Lauren has one in his collection. In black of course.
