Z-like: ’71 Datsun 510
If you followed racing in the ’70s you probably came to respect the Datsun 510. They were successfully campaigned by a number of well-known race teams. One of the more successful teams was BRE or Brock Racing Enterprises. Pete Brock has a storied career as a designer who penned what became the Stingray and the Daytona Cobra. The Datsun 510s won a few trans-Am 2.5 liter championships. One might say they were the Japanese BMW 1600 although not at all as sophisticated straight from the dealer. Today’s find is a real sleeper and not a BRE clone. It is finished in its original minty green color and has been treated to a recent quality respray. The interior looks fairly stock except a close-ratio 5-speed is now connected to the shifter. And connected to that is a 2-liter OHC engine. Brakes have been upgraded to 280Z vented and Konis hold the four corners in check. The wheel choice is okay but we might want to try something a bit more old school. We are told there are very few stock 510s around. They are easy to modify and the basic structure is able to handle whatever owners can come up with. High praise to the builder of this one for giving the car the required bits to make it a runner yet keeping the exterior plain and simple. Click here for the listing.
Pete Brock owned the team, but John Morton drove the car…
