3-Pedals: ’71 Mercedes-Benz 280SL
We all know by now that the Pagoda roof SL has finally found a place in Mercedes-Benz history. Collectors are snapping up the best examples at a rapid pace. Like many classics prior to their ascension to stardom, many have been poorly restored or neglected. Frequent readers might remember that these particular M-B SLs have a unique and subtle detail referred to as headlight notches. When a restoration or a repaint is done to a Pagoda SL, many inexperienced shops smooth them over. Although it is a serious fault it doesn’t rule out the car as a “nice driver” status example. But it may tell you the rest of the SL has been taken care of by someone not familiar with the brand. So to us, it is a red flag to look deeper. We don’t know if this is one of those cars but we do know the seller and they have a good reputation. This one is just beautiful in Dark Green with what appears to be original Cognac leather interior that needs some minor repair. It is a rare (for ’71), 4-speed manual making it a car any collector should consider. It has the factory hard top that gives the Pagoda its name. The asking price is $69,900 and it is right here in Mint territory if anyone wants us to take a look. Click here for the listing.
