Ancient Mayan: ’75 Porsche 914 1.8

By the late 1960s, the 912 was overdue for replacement. It was based on the 911 so it became pretty costly to build and competition from the Datsun 240Z made the 912 look like a wimp. Porsche had strong ties to VW so they collaborated on a new mid-engine car called the 914. It was badged as a VW-Porsche in Europe. It was known as a Porsche in the US but never carried the Porsche crest on the hood. Like what Ferrari did with the first Dino. It was not as sleek in styling as a 911 but it avoided most of the drawbacks of the typical mid-engine layout. The base VW-derived engines gave adequate performance and the handling is sharp with terrific brakes and phenomenal steering.
The 1970s was all about bright colors adding more fun to the entire package. That is why we like this very original Mayan Green with the 1.8 motor. It is fitted with dealer installed “factory” A/C, has a lot of documents and still has all of the original keys. An ANSA exhaust was recently fitted and that should add to the open air driving experience. Vroom! The mileage is low at 69,000 so the mechanicals should be in good order. We think this is the perfect mid-70s sports car for not a lot of money. It is a Porsche don’t forget so you have some bragging rights and frankly the MGs and Triumphs of the same era look a little archaic on the technology side in comparison. We like the seller known for cherry-picking the best and pricing it fairly. It is somewhat local to Mint’s headquarters if you are interested in getting some eyes on it. The asking price is $16,500.
