Gooding & Co. at Amelia Island

photo 1

The weather in Florida is brisk but the bidding in the Gooding Auction Tent was brisker. We got a bit of a late start and that sent us to the satellite parking area that was right on the beach. It was even colder there thankfully the bus came quickly. First on the block for us was what Jerry Seinfeld calls “the dead guy car”. RS M471He defines that as a car where the owner has to die in order for someone else to gain possession. If you driven one, you would understand. This M471 Lightweight has flawless ownership history. It hammered at $1.275 million, slightly above high estimate. 59 IsettaNext up, and leading a parade of BMWs, was a cute as a button BMW Isetta 300, complete with luggage rack and wicker basket. Charlie Ross, the best auctioneer in the business, asked one bidder if he could even fit in it! The hammered price was $46,000. Under the high estimate of $55,000. photo 3Our team’s favorite was Lot 29: a barn-find ’64 300SL Roadster with hardtop. The wasn’t a wreck of a barn find but a dusty, unrestored original in near perfect condition…for a rally car! It definitely had some hard miles on it illuminated in front by an array of rally lights and factory headlamp stone guards. The interior was magnificent. The hammered price a stout $2.035 million. photo 2As amazing as the SL was the ’55 Ferrari GT Europa in unrestored condition was spectacular. In the same family until recently complete with family pictures when new. Breathtaking and should be left untouched. Did you hear that wealthy person who paid $$2.53 million? Don’t you dare touch it. photo 3 (1)A ’59 Porsche 718 RSK sold for $3.3 million, off the high estimate by a few hundred grand. But what’s that among these players. There were a host of affordable cars for us regular folks. A 1964 BMW 700 Luxus LS 2-door sold for way under low estimate at $20 grand. posterGuess the fact the wheels and windows were date-coded didn’t make a difference. We couldn’t stay for the entire auction but we will try to get more auction results from the lower end and report back.

Today is the 2nd Annual Cars & Coffee on the golf course of The Ritz. We elected not to participate with the SL500. It’s nice but not C&C worthy. Later in the day, The RM Auction. That will be interesting.

First Impressions: 2014 Amelia Island Concours

300SL detail

If you have ever been part of an organizing team for a major event you would know what it is like to run an event of the magnitude of Amelia Island. This is the 19th year of the event and by sheer will and a ton of hard work, it has bullied its way into being one of the top automotive events in the USA, if not the world. That is quite an accomplishment. One might say Amelia Island is the East Coast equivalent of Monterey Week in August. The vibe is a lot different.

Ghost Buster: ’55 DeSoto Firedome Wagon

55 Desoto fr

The Keller years at Chrysler ended in 1955 with the advent of stylish cars like the 1955 DeSoto Firedome station wagon. K.T. Keller, corporate president since 1935, liked conservative styling with high rooflines that allowed passengers to keep their hats on. But America wanted sleek, stylish cars. Chrysler’s new chief of design, Virgil Exner, really shook things up. His styling was dramatic by 1950s standards. In 1955, Virgil introduced new styling for all Chrysler divisions. Today’s Firedome wagon comes from Dan Aykroyd’s personal collection.  Read More

Near perfect: ’87 Porsche 928S4 5-Speed

Ext 3

We will have one in our garage one day for sure, just to get it out of our system. These are amazing cars probably the best non-911 Porsche. They are uber-luxurious, fast and competent plus they aren’t too expensive to buy although they are to repair. The most desirable are the rare last bunch from ’93-’95 called the GTS. Prices reflect that too. The real sweet spot are the cars from ’87-’89 and amongst those, the 5-speed. Today we have a spectacular 5-speed in Dark Blue with Linen interior and a scant 59,000 miles. 2-Pedals: ’62 Jaguar Mark 2

$_57

A vintage Jaguar Saloon, or Sedan on this side of the pond, is a thing of beauty.. They adhered to Sir William Lyon’s philosophy of “grace, pace and space”, when they conceived this elegant 4-door. Like many old luxury cars, they were not respected by collectors as much as sporty coupes and convertibles. We get that. However with the increasing popularity of historic rallies and enjoyable classic car tours, they are gaining some serious respect. Why not be comfortable while you’re having fun. Read More

A shade of gray : ’64 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb

c864-leftfront-remote

Some say these Coupes are among the last of the hand-built cars from Mercedes-Benz. We would probably add the 600 Sedan/Limo to that list. The Cabriolets have received all of the attention lately however the Coupes have a lot to offer. Today’s find looks to be White Grey with Navy interior. It is a 2-owner car with the last since 1969. The interiors in these Coupes are exceptional. There is wood everywhere. Read More

OD’d : ’71 Triumph TR6

01212_bxUw5l0zmix_600x450Here is another well priced early Triumph TR6. But this one has the really nice Overdrive option. We do not know how many were equipped with Overdrive but they do seem to be rare and harder to find. This one appears to be very original although the seller doesn’t tell us much about it. Read More

Gone fishing: ’51 Studebaker Pickup

51 Stude fr

Idaho is very kind to motorcars. Frankly, we didn’t know that until our son moved to Boise a few years ago. They don’t use salt on the roads preferring to use the more environmentally correct sand when necessary. The region is home to some of the best fishing holes in the country. Therefore it doesn’t surprise us that an avid fisherman bought this Studebaker new in ’51 and had a canopy installed so he could go fishing in style. Read More

Screen Shot 2014-02-24 at 7.05.21 PM

A Hennessey snake bite vanquishes the Bugatti Veyron title as fastest production car. Not by much but just enough. It doesn’t take long to watch this video so if you have gasoline in your veins, watch it. Click on the image above, go full screen and turn up the volume.

Tiger’s bones: ’62 Sunbeam Alpine Series II

$_57-4

Everyone goes bananas for a Sunbeam Tiger but the basis for the Tiger, the Alpine, gets short shrift. It shouldn’t because it is a really decent sports car in the British tradition. Alpines were pretty competitive too winning their class in SCCA racing here in the states and making a pretty decent showing in rallies in Europe. We have a thing for rally cars and that would be the direction we might take with this one. And one reason for that is the factory hard top that comes along with it. Read More

A Tribute to NASCAR

NASCAR RacersIf you are a racing snob and you think drivers should have names like Ludovico, Colin or Hans, I may have lost you today. Today, racing is about guys with names like Fireball, Junior, and even Tiny. It is the weekend when NASCAR kicks off the season with the classic on the beach – The Daytona 500.

NASCAR history is the stuff movies are made of. Bill France, Sr. organized a bunch of former bootleggers into one of the most profitable franchises in history. Then he built The Daytona Speedway back in 1959 and gave us the race we will all watch today. Maybe with historic results too. Kind of like Hilary running for President. We can’t cover the history of stock car racing in this space but go to Wikipedia and learn about the early days of the sport. It will make you appreciate today even more. And watch this silly (but cool) video for a few minutes – An Ode to Fireball Roberts. Very kitschy.

Bali high: ’63 Porsche 356B

63 Porsche 356B fr

Here is a less than perfect 356B Porsche you can enjoy today if you can find a way to sit in it comfortably. It is a 3-owner car if you count the seller. Very little rust and slight repaired body damage up front means this is a solid restoration candidate you can decide to take in any direction. It is finished in Bali Blue with red leatherette and that is, according the seller, a special order car supported by the Certificate of Authenticity. Read More

The Volvo 122S Story – ’twas a scam.

66 Volvo frSome nefarious creep hijacked a reputable eBayers account then hijacked the 122S previously sold by Cascadia Classics. That is why the scam listing eBay account had so many positive transactions under their belt. This is the Comment Trail in case you didn’t see it:

Definitely a scam, I’m the previous seller and was contacted this morning by the person who hit the buy it now at $9900. Fortunately he is web savvy and realized it was fraud as soon as they spoke to the “seller”. I think he may have saved a less experienced buyer from a lot of heartache and expense. Ebay’s been notified as well as the holder of the seller account that was hijacked.  -Bob

Thanks for updating us! As I mentioned in our post, we really admire all of the cars you find and the way in which you present them. Not too many black plate, pea green, pristine 122Ss around so it wasn’t hard to recognize. Didn’t realize the eBayer had his account hijacked though. It’s like the wild west…Mint2Me

Unfortunately it’s becoming more common on eBay, seems to happen a few times a year with my listings. hijack an id, copy and paste and wait for a sucker. Thanks for your comments.  -Bob

I love the Cascadia cars and their auctions. It’s a master class in how to present a car for sale.  -Jack

I too confirm that this listing is a scam. I am the successful buyer that outbid at least one other back in November and bought this Volvo form Cascadia. It is still in my possession and is not nor has it been offered for sale.
Additionally, the purchase from Bob W , owner of Cascadia, was smooth, straight forward, informative, and helpful.
I was first made aware of this Volvo on BaT and I enjoy both your site and BaT religiously every morning.  -David W

Thanks for closing the loop on this one. It has become part of our “job”-readers & writers alike (our lawyer will hate that) to sniff out scams. Cascadia is terrific. We wish more people would take the time that they do to find great cars and present them in such a beautiful manner. Guess it helps to be a talented photographer, right Bob? BaT and Mint2Me have similar taste and sometimes we discover and decide to feature the same car. But I think we are different enough for both of us to warrant a daily read. We read them every morning and my friend bought a Landie off of BaT on our recommendation.- Mint2Me

Part 300: ’56 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

56 SL fr 2

This is another one of those classic cars that were ignored for such a long time and are now on fire. They are elegant convertibles with impeccable build-quality typical of Mercedes-Benz cars of this period. The downside of the 190SL is the somewhat anemic performance. Since you can’t really do too much about that, just put the top down and enjoy the ride. Today’s featured car might actually have something we haven’t seen before – seats from a 300SL. Read More

Sold! Complete: ’73 BMW 2002tii

73 BMW fr

Okay, this can be a really short feature. What we have is a rust-free, refreshed, 2002tii painted in original silver metallic and with an updated 5-speed transmission. The interior is beautifully done with re-upholstered sport seats and a crack free dash. Speaking of the dash, it does have all of the unique features of the 2002tii in place except that ugly contemporary radio which has to go. The exterior looks beautiful with nice gaps and straight factory panels. Read More
