Doc’s car: ’66 Mercedes-Benz 230SL
We love finding an unusual W113, Pagoda, Mercedes SL. That’s a mouthful. The “inside” model number for these is W113 because they were based on a shortened W111 chassis. We call them Pagodas, you recall, because of the unique style of the factory hardtop. And finally SL, refers to Sport Leicht (SL) – Sport Lightweight. With all that said, we liked this featured 230SL for a number of reasons. It is a 2-owner car and it comes with mountains of paperwork. We also like the unusual color of Tunis Beige with brown interior.
And finally, it is the very desirable 4-speed manual transmission car. That is a more enjoyable way to extract all 150hp from the inline 6. The 230SL is not without cosmetic issues and you can deal with them during your ownership period. We think the price reflects the work required for a rust free, California, early SL with only 77,000 documented mileage. The seller is one of our favorites too. We don’t know how they come up with all of these great cars! Click here for the listing.
