One-off: ’57 Wachs Porsche Special
The Wachs Porsche Special is the poster child for the spirit of motor racing in the ’50s. Enterprising racers with a bit of engineering or automotive know-how didn’t follow the crowd and built their own car. Lee Wachs was one of those intrepid racers who had a better idea. Lee used mostly Porsche mechanicals of the period and curiously, the rear of an Austin-Healey 100S. The all-aluminum 100S is the holy grail of Healeys by the way. The rest of the Wachs was fashioned by hand out of aluminum. Lee raced it in SCCA and So-Cal events. We found some reference to the Wachs Porsche in ’61 where it was supposed to race at a USAC event. It did not compete. Lee sold the Special to the current owner in the early ’70s. It has a rich history competing in VSCCA events and is very competitive. The Wachs is always kept in good mechanical condition. It is hard to estimate what one-off racers are valued. The asking price is a hefty $129,000. Click here for the listing.
