Some work required: ’69 Lotus Elan S4
When you hear Lotus, you think of all of the innovation Colin Chapman brought to the art of sports car manufacturing. It became the essential British Sports Car of the ’60s. Light weight, a reasonably stiff backbone chassis, a willing twin-cam engine and a perfectly tuned suspension translated into loads of fun…if you were less than 6 feet tall. Elans are pretty small. At 1517 pounds it could sprint to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. Not too shabby for a car with 110hp. We have one of our frequent contributors to thank for this one. Today’s find would be a nice late winter, early spring project. The seller tells us, in detail, all of the work done to make it roadworthy. The next owner will still have a few things left to do. He says it overheats in traffic. Clearly not uncommon for a British sports car but frightening none the less. The body is sound and attractive but not perfect. Same for the interior. The wheels have spinners (that’s what we called them in Brooklyn). Nice touch. The seller is looking for $23,000. Click here for the listing.
