Unsung wagon: ’85 Toyota Land Cruiser
If you are a frequent reader of Mint you will know that we like these FJ 60s a lot. The FJ40 gets all of the love yet this unassuming Wagon is an excellent, capable off-roader and a smart alternative to the Land Rover/Range Rover. That is if you can check your ego at the door. No doubt the Land Cruiser has little in the way of luxury touches and certainly doesn’t feel like an elegant Jaguar on steroids. But it probably won’t leave you stranded on the back forty either. Their reliability and off-road prowess is legendary. Just ask the UN, the Taliban or anyone cruising the Outback. They all seem to have a FJ60. Now most FJs will have at least 6 digits of miles under its belt and that shouldn’t scare you away. Buying one with 150,000 to 200,000 is considered low miles. Therefore you will be impressed when you learn that this one has 39,000 original miles. It is also easy to see if it is real or imaginary. The interiors were all cloth and very fragile. All you have to do is check the condition of the interior and you’ll know the score. This one seems totally legit. But that doesn’t mean the bottom isn’t consumed by rust and corrosion. The body panels look rust-free but there are no chassis pics. They didn’t come rust proofed. Actually just the opposite. They rust just by looking at them so be wary. Should you need something cool that will go anywhere, bid on this one. Maybe the seller will take a step or two back and send you a picture of the entire front of the truck. I featured this Cruiser almost 5 years ago so I have no idea where it is now. Thanks for looking and good luck in your search.
