Sleeper: ’66 Chevrolet Bel Air 427 L72
Those were the days. You could go into any Chevy showroom and force the salesman to order you a car with nothing in it. No Premium Package, no Entertainment Package, no Deluxe Illumination, no nothing. Try that with a new Corvette. Or better yet, try ordering the new Impala with Corvette’s 450 horse LT1 motor. Not happening. But I guess you could do what they did back then and buy a car for the engine to be transplanted into something else. Apparently, they did that a lot in ’66. So finding a low mileage, matching numbers Bel Air with a L72 and a 4-speed is pretty rare. It would be an ultimate sleeper if it wasn’t red. Better if it was black but why quibble. One doesn’t expect these to handle really well but Chevy tried by offering up a F-41 special purpose suspension. Perhaps law enforcement got a few of these. Everything else in the car is pretty rare like the tach, the 12-bolt rear, the Muncie close-ratio 4-speed. Hagerty tells us that these don’t sell for very much when they come available. Good for us and not for the seller. It seems no one at auction has paid more than $20 grand for one. That doesn’t mean that is the highest price paid for one. Funny, the bids are way over that already. We think this would be loads of fun as is. Click here for the eBay auction.

Boy, do we love that car of yours! It’s so hard to project what a car will sell for when it is so rare. Well it is obvious we missed that Mecum information in our search. If you want to put a number on it that would make you happy, I will be happy to repost it for you.
