Taxi: ’60 Fiat 600 Multipla
We like station wagons but somehow, this is more like a mini, mini van. In fact, the 600 Multipla was used frequently as a taxi in Italy. Why not? The interior was very versatile allowing for few passengers and much luggage or just passengers. Today, these, in great condition, pull huge numbers at auctions. Our Checker Taxi doesn’t enjoy the same status. Today’s Multipla may be one of the best available. The seller tells us the owners did a complete rotisserie restoration on it then applied some pretty nice paint. The drivetrain was rebuilt along the way using the original components. We’ve never driven one but it must be a blast to drive. Maybe not so much humming back from Kennedy airport with a full fare in rush hour traffic. That’s when a Checker is a better choice.
