Tall Tail: Sunbeam Tiger Series 1
The seller didn’t list the year of his Tiger but we can assume it is a Series 1A since it has the 260ci motor. We’ve featured later 289 equipped Tigers before but not an early Series 1 car. Approximately 1,650 cars were built by Jensen for Rootes. This was a bit of a blow to Shelby who had expected to get the assembly contract since he was responsible for development. Volvo had just fired Jensen for building sub-par P1800 sports cars so it stands to reason Rootes would step in. The Jensen folks deployed a sledgehammer to modify each newly painted bulkhead to allow the V-8 engine room to slip in. Don’t know if Shelby would have had a different solution. Today’s Series 1 looks pleasantly benign in metallic blue with spinners attached to chrome wheel covers. We don’t know too much more about it other than it is in the Tiger Registry. The Tiger Tail is a cute accessory but we are not sure we would keep that tradition. The seller is asking $42,500. That might be the right price but there are a few 289 equipped cars priced similarly are still available after months on the market. So perhaps it is a bit ahead of the marketplace.
