Auld Lange Syne: ’64 Volkswagen Microbus
Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon originally came up with the idea for the bus back in 1948. And 2013 marks the end of its production run. Yes Type 2 fans, the venerable VW Bus has been in production down in Brazil since 1957. The last 600 will be made this year and then no more. With that bit of historic information, what would Mr. Pond say about this rare 21-window, double-door bus that is selling for a whopping $149,000! VW bus prices have been on the move for years now. We have seen prices for the 21-window buses hit over $100,000 at auction. But this one has some rare, documented options that set it apart from the rest. Frankly, you have to be a numbers person to really care because these options, although rare, don’t add much to the enjoyment of your vintage bus. The big difference between this bus and all others are the double doors. That’s right passenger doors on both side of the vehicle. That also means the center seat is split into 3 sections so rear seat passengers get easier access. It also has 6, pop out windows along the sides and a safari windshield that opens for wind in the face driving. Of course, the sky is the limit with the huge retractable sunroof overhead. The bus is masterfully restored and has all of the original parts. And for your $149,000, you get a 12-volt conversion for brighter lights and easier starting.
