Three scoops please: ’70 Rover 3500S
We have featured a few Rover 2000TCs before. The TC was much-loved by the motoring journalists back in the day. The TC features a rather robust “safety cage” construction and a very novel and effective rear suspension. During the late ’60s and early ’70s it seemed everyone was stuffing bigger engines into smaller cars. And that is the case with the 3500S Rover. The venerable Buick V8 weighed as much as the chunky 4-pot motor yet produced significantly more power, so in the Rover 2000 it went. In addition to the V8, the US version (aka NADA), came standard with an automatic, ice alert, power windows and A/C. Today’s featured 3500S has been spared by careful, long-term ownership. The interior is original as well as some of the exterior paint (the rear looks refinished for some reason). And here is a rare statement for a vintage British saloon – everything, including the electric windows and A/C, works. The US cars have a unique engine bonnet with 3 hood scoops that function. There is an additional air inlet for the larger radiator too. Now here is a unique feature: because of the limited trunk space caused by relocating the battery, you can mount the spare on top of the rear trunk lid. Funky but effective. However rare and interesting these Rovers are, they fall short on the collectible scale. Regardless, any rare, vintage British saloon in this condition will make you a star at the next British car gathering. Click here for the eBay auction.
