1 of 1: ’81 American Motors AMX Turbo PPG Pace Car
It isn’t often that a factory authorized one-off comes to market. But I guess since AMC is no more, there is no point holding on to it for the corporate museum. The AMX Turbo made its debut as the official pace car for the Milwaukee 150 on June 7th, 1981! PPG Industries funded the project. They invited each manufacturer to pull out the stops and create a one-off car that displayed their latest technology. Today’s find, courtesy of Fred. R., is the pace car built for AMC and later owned by AMC Vice President of Design, Richard Teague. The AMX Turbo began life as an AMC Spirit. You can’t get any more mundane. The body was replaced with a more aerodynamically efficient, fiberglass shell. It also included a unique ram air induction system designed into the rear quarter panel, and a fully integrated rear deck spoiler. The interior was reconstructed to include new front bucket seats and a special roll bar and cage. Teague took a docile 258 CID 6 Cylinder power plant and turned it into a monster! Using an exhaust driven turbocharger built by Turbo Systems, they managed to squeeze 450 horses out of it. This will make some collector really happy but at what price? Click here for the listing.
