Sparrows beware: ’55 Imperial

1955 Chrysler Imperial

The Imperial was launched and registered as a separate marque in 1955, apart from the Chrysler brand. We don’t run across many of these at shows and none have ever been submitted before. So when an original condition 1st year Imperial was sent in by Frank K., we couldn’t resist. The 1955 models are said to be inspired by Exner’s own 1952 show cars. 1955 Chrysler Imperial 1955 Chrysler Imperial 1955 Chrysler Imperial The platform and bodyshell were shared with that year’s big Chryslers, but the Imperial had a wheelbase that was 4.0 inches longer, providing it with more rear seat legroom. It also had a wide-spaced split eggcrate grille, the same as that used on the Chrysler 300. Its most distinguished design feature is the free-standing “gunsight” taillights mounted above the rear quarters, which were similar to those on the Exner’s 1951 K310 concept car. Gunsight taillights were also known as “sparrow-strainer” taillights, named after the device used to keep birds out of early jet-engines. These taillights were separated from the fender and surrounded by a ring and became an Imperial fixture through 1962. How cool are they! The featured car is a 54,000 mile car in original condition. It is powered by a 331ci Hemi engine coupled to a 2-speed automatic controlled by a small chrome pod with push buttons. The sellers say there is no rust or accident repair and the interior is in very good original condition. We love the white body with gold metallic paint. As rare a car as it is, we don’t think it will command a lot of money. Perhaps the mid-teens at best. If we are right, that is a lot of car for the money (literally).
