In the 1990s, Cadillac was trying to turn the tide after being marginalized for years. At one time it was among the most respected brands in the world. It seemed all was lost. Halo cars are a common practice for Detroit marketers to try to reestablish a beachhead and start the long road to redemption. The Allante was Cadillac’s answer. The car was produced in small numbers and was unique in several ways. The bodies were designed and manufactured by Pininfarina in Italy, then flown to Detroit for final assembly – the Cadillac Air Bridge or something like that. It was a bit anemic to start with – mild power ratings trying to overcome the Allante’s 3,720-pound curb weight.
